At Preshil, we don’t mould students to fit the system. Instead, we create the kind of environment where young people become more of who they already are, with confidence, curiosity and purpose.

For nearly 100 years, we’ve supported students to think deeply, grow with integrity and follow their own path. Our approach is built on trust, relationships and a belief in each young person’s capacity to thrive when they feel safe, known and inspired.

Four reasons families choose Preshil

1. We’re a brave space, built for originals

When students took the stage at a recent festival, there was no script, no rehearsed routine—just an improvised burst of music. It wasn’t polished or predictable, but it was entirely their own, and applauded by their peers and families.

At Preshil, individuality isn’t an exception. It’s the starting point. We don’t smooth out differences; we help them shine. Every student is supported to grow into themselves through creative, social and intellectual self-expression. No uniforms, no rankings. Just real learning, on their terms.

2. We’re independent, so our students can be too

When a class recently explored the theme of migration, the educators didn’t have a predetermined path in mind. Instead, students led the way, exploring bird migration, family stories, even AFL trades. Not only was the concept more deeply explored, but each student’s contribution made the learning stick.

Student-led learning isn’t an add-on here, it’s how we operate. Free from standardised testing and rigid curriculum rules, our educators adapt to each student’s interests and strengths while still building rigour, skill and depth. It’s learning that’s personal, purposeful and built to last.

3. We deliver meaningful results, on their terms

A recent student decided to build her senior program around subjects she loved, but hadn’t always excelled in. She chose a path that pushed her outside her comfort zone, and the school backed her all the way, supporting her inner confidence to succeed on her own terms.

Academic success at Preshil doesn’t come from ticking boxes—it comes from students shaping their own path. Whether it’s the International Baccalaureate (IB), VCE, VET or the VCE Vocational Major (VM), our secondary students build programs that reflect who they are—supported to stretch, grow and achieve.

In 2024, 100% of our graduating students received a first-round university offer, and 71% received an offer for their first-preference course. These outcomes reflect more than academic achievement. They prove that a personalised, student-led approach opens real doors.

4. We’re a community built on relationships, not rules

When a group of primary students were play-fighting with sticks, educators didn’t step in and impose rules. Instead, they worked with the students to set their own safe boundaries. It built real-life skills: negotiating boundaries, listening to others, and owning their decisions.

We don’t manage behaviour—we build responsibility. With team teaching, small class sizes and strong relationships, students are seen, heard and trusted. Conflict is resolved through dialogue, and every moment—big or small—is an opportunity for growth and connection.

The educational principles behind everything we do

Preshil’s approach to education is grounded in a set of nine enduring principles that shape every classroom, conversation and learning experience. They’re the reason our students are trusted to think for themselves, express who they are and grow into confident, capable young people.

1. Individualised Learning

We meet each young person where they are. No comparisons, no rigid expectations—just thoughtful, responsive teaching that adapts to the individual.

2. Social Learning

We believe learning happens in relationships. Students grow through collaboration, peer learning and shared responsibility, supported by a close-knit school community that values inclusion, mutual respect and the unique contribution of every learner.

3. Understanding Behaviour

We don’t label students. We look for and help them understand the ‘why’ behind their actions, and guide them to reflect, take responsibility, and build better relationships.

4. Fostering Learning and Growth

Curiosity comes first. We design learning experiences that are meaningful, motivating and tailored to each student’s interests and talents.

5. Enquiry-Based and Task-Oriented Learning

Learning is hands-on, project-based and led by student questions. We focus on doing, making and solving—not memorising for its own sake.

6. Arts and Self-Expression

Creativity is a way of thinking, not just a subject. From art and music to enquiry and collaboration, students are supported to explore ideas, challenge norms and express themselves in ways that are courageous and connected to the world around them.

7. Participatory Democracy and Student Agency

Students are active participants in shaping school life. They have a voice in decisions, project directions, and issues that matter to them. Leadership isn’t a badge, it’s students knowing that they have a voice on issues that matter to them.

8. Relationships and Community

We are a first-name school with a strong sense of trust. Families, teachers and students form a close-knit community where difference is valued and everyone belongs.

9. Purpose of Education

Education should prepare young people to engage thoughtfully with the world. We nurture social awareness, critical thinking and a lifelong love of learning.
