PRESHIL WEEKLY
Welcome Back!
After a few quiet weeks on site during the winter break, it is almost magical to have our staff and students back, engaging with our community of learners. Our students and staff have reconnected smoothly in the learning journey. Our community has come together to discuss both the term ahead and some broader contextual updates, such as the sale of Kalimna and what this will mean for our student experience.
I have visited both campuses and met with students to discuss these changes. As has been the case throughout my time here, our students are informed, intelligent, and pragmatic in navigating these changes. This was evident in our discussions about the long-term transitional plans for Kalimna.
Educational Review Release Update
As communicated earlier this week, we will be releasing the educational review findings following our community forum next Tuesday. I speak more about this in the video message above and have provided the forum details below for your reference. This review process has been deeply connected to our community and focused on enhancing our students’ experiences. Therefore, we believe it is appropriate to come together as a community to share the findings of the report prior to its distribution.
Educational Review Community Forum details:
DATE: Tuesday 23 July 2024
TIME: 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

An excerpt from the report is included in this communication (Preshil Educational Principles Excerpt), as we believe it is an important piece of our work toward defining our Preshilian identity and cultural essence. The main report, which collated and synthesised our community’s feelings and perspectives on our school climate, along with the strategic pillars and subsequent educational review, all pointed toward the need for a defined Preshilian identity. We hope the Preshil educational principles will form the beginning of what this identity looks like for all members of our community.
I look forward to seeing everyone at this online event on Tuesday as we present the Educational Review report and discuss the next steps forward on our shared journey.
Warm regards,
Aaron Mackinnon
Principal
THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Electives Update
Each term as part of Electives the students experience a range of Career related workshops. This week our Years 9 and 10 students, who were not involved in the Production, participated in a Public Speaking Workshop with the team from The Y who coordinate the Victorian Youth Parliament which you can read about here: https://vicyouth.ymca.org.au/learning-and-leadership/youth-parliament It was a full 2 hour agenda that expanded their skills in communication, collaboration and confidence..
Kindergarten Update
This week the kindergarten welcomed three new families and one returning Preshil family into our community. Jude, Luca, Ben and Amelia – wominjeka! We have had a busy week of playing dinosaurs, building fantastical block creations and making discoveries in nature. On Thursday we found a wibbly wobbly blob on a log that our research revealed to be a crystal brain jelly fungus. Waring (wombat) season is a great time for fungus hunting. The wonders of our garden never cease to astound us!
Reach Foundation Workshop
This Thursday, The Reach Foundation facilitated the third session in a 4 part workshop series to nurture connection, understanding and empathy amongst students in the Year 8 cohort. To build a sense of community spirit and connection, our three facilitators (Daphne, Fearne and Katy) worked with students to build spaghetti towers, participate in team quizzes and engage in a game of ‘shoot the basketball’ as they were selected to answer meaningful and thought provoking questions about their lives and those around them. These questions encouraged students to think about the type of friend they wanted to be, how they wanted to show up and be thought of in their year level, and the ways they could be kinder to each other in the present, and for the entirety of their high school experience. We are very grateful to The Reach Foundation and School Focused Youth Services (SFYS) who have funded this opportunity for our students at Preshil.
MacBeth Theatre Excursion
On the first day of term our theatre and production students went to see the Malthouse Theatre’s production of MacBeth. Well timed as our production of Lady MacBeth opens next week. Students enjoyed the performance and were particularly impressed with the staging and lighting. They have come away with many ideas and inspiration for their own performance next week.
The Peace Cafe
The “Peace Café” is opening next Wednesday 24 th July 2024 and will be open every Wednesday (lunchtime) from week 2 (term 3) selling Sushi (made fresh and delivered on the day), hot chocolate, tea’s, coke and coke zero, plus muesli bars and hopefully other pre-packaged items. Items will change weekly, and it will be a matter of coming to the window to see what’s available. Parents/students and staff must pre-order their Sushi via TryBooking (PRE-ORDER HERE). All sushi rolls cost $3.50 and flavours include – teriyaki chicken, tuna and avocado, plain, avocado, chicken schnitzel, cucumber and marinated tofu. Sushi will come prepackaged with soy sauce. The Café will be run by students and staff, who are all keen to see the Peace Café operate successfully and assist in purchasing much needed supplies for Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. The Peace Café is always on the outlook for food donations – largely marsh-mellows, various flavours of herbal tea, muesli bars and any other prepackaged items, if you can donate these items please drop them into reception. And to everyone who has donated, we can’t thank you enough, often these items come in with no name, so we want you to know, we have received your items and are very grateful.
Year 7 Design
In Design this week the Year 7 cohort started a new exploration into observational drawing. They began by drawing the objects in the design space. They shared their ideas and feedback with one another in a very constructive and positive way.
Lady Macbeth Production
The production is in full rehearsal swing. Students and staff are working tirelessly to add finishing touches to this exciting show. The week started with the cast spending the day painting the set and turning the black box into the dark and foreboding space of the Lady MacBeth story. Hours have been spent designing and setting the lighting, sound, music and costumes. The students and staff involved are excited to share this powerful homegrown production.
Year 11 Music
Special mention to Eva from Year 11 on her outstanding piano performance at the Secondary School meeting this afternoon. Your incredible talent and hard work truly shone through.
