Preshil Weekly – Term 4 Week 4

PRESHIL WEEKLY

Dear Preshil Community,

An absolute highlight this week was spending time with our Arlington children on the front lawn as they read, played, and enjoyed a wonderful sense of community. The natural pedagogical approach we take allows our children and young people to learn at their own pace while connecting with others and the outdoors – whenever possible! This refreshing perspective on education is particularly important as society grapples with how to adopt a more human-centred approach to learning. Here at Preshil, we believe we have a truly special answer to what this can look like!

Of course, we also celebrated the annual festivity of Halloween this week. It was filled with the usual creativity, costumes, and vibrant energy, with many people getting particularly involved—always a bit of fun!

I’d like to remind everyone of some ongoing campaigns aimed at supporting the progress of our beautiful school:

  • Arlington Working Bee: Join us for a working bee to address general maintenance needs around the site. This will take place on Saturday, 16th November, from 9 AM to 11 AM, followed by a sausage sizzle.
  • Advertising and Promotion: We are calling for support to help make Melbourne’s best-kept secret a little more known! We’ve developed small enrolment placards and are seeking volunteers to display them at the front of their properties for a two-week advertising campaign. Ideally, we are looking for homes with street frontage in areas with higher foot traffic. Our goal is to place 12 boards around Melbourne! If you can assist, please email [email protected].

Wishing our families a wonderful long weekend ahead!

Warm regards,

Aaron Mackinnon
Principal

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Year 7 and 8 students to Scienceworks
This week, our Year 7 and 8 students enjoyed an exciting trip to Scienceworks as part of their MYP Science studies. They explored interactive exhibits and saw firsthand how scientific ideas are creatively presented. A fantastic hands-on learning experience for all.

Year 10 Weaving
We’re now four weeks into our Chair Weaving unit, and our Year 10 designers have truly impressed us with their creativity and dedication to this unique project! From sanding and repainting old frames to experimenting with intricate weaving patterns, the students have shown incredible skill and enthusiasm, breathing new life into every piece they touch. With only a few weeks left, the final products are coming together beautifully, and we can’t wait to see the finished pieces. We’ll wrap up the unit with a showcase, where each designer will reflect on their journey—from sourcing and restoring the chair to creating an original woven design.

Help us fill the CAN Bin
The CAN BIN is desperately in need of your empty cans. Pictured below is Naomi Gu, our incredible Science Teacher, dropping her can in the CAN BIN and helping out OZHarvest. Our Year 11 Students Brooke and Charlotte are leading this initiative, hoping it can have a two fold effect by cleaning up the school and raising funds for OzHarvest, a charity dedicated to helping vulnerable people by delivering nutritious food to those in need across Australia.

We are collecting ALL CANS in the CAN BIN (located outside of reception) and then taking them to local recycling points to cash in and then donating that cash to OzHarvest. The collection is only running for two more weeks and we need your help to fill the bin with cans. Please, please bring your empty (uncrushed) cans into Preshil to place in the CAN BIN like Naomi. No donation is too small, every contribution adds up.

Preshil T-Shirts
Our Vocational Major students have produced “heritage” Preshil t-shirts for sale to the Preshil community. These designs are based on the old 1970’s Preshil (optional) uniform design and pay homage to Preshil’s rich history. They will be available next week.

Bake Sale for ASRC
What a way to finish the week, with the final bake sale raising funds for the ASRC. We had a plentiful amount of baked goodies, such that they were heavily discounted, and it took no time for the news to spread. Michael remarked it was somewhat like the Preston Market at 1.00pm on a Saturday. It was lovely to see the sharing of baked goodies between the primary children, and their younger siblings in our Kindergarten. Thank you to all our families who sent some gold coins to school for this cause.
