PRESHIL WEEKLY

Dear Preshil Community,

Today marks the final day of our Year 12 students’ Preshil journey, culminating in their valedictory dinner and celebrations. This cherished event brings together our Year 12s and their families, starting at the BK library and continuing with a traditional dinner at the Kevin Borland Hall on the Arlington site. We wish our Year 12s all the best for their future beyond Preshil, and are confident that they will embrace the opportunities ahead with courage, kindness, and a strong sense of community. They will forever be Preshilian!

I would also like to continue to remind everyone of our ongoing campaigns and event aimed at supporting the progress and community connect of our school:

Arlington Working Bee: Join us for a working bee to address general maintenance needs around the site. This will take place on Saturday, 16th November, from 9 AM to 11 AM, followed by a sausage sizzle.

Advertising and Promotion: Thank you to the families who have reached out to support us with this initiative. We are looking for help to spread the word about Melbourne’s best-kept secret! We’ve developed small enrolment placards and are seeking volunteers to display them in front of their properties for a two-week advertising campaign. Ideally, we are looking for homes with street frontage in high foot-traffic areas. Our goal is to place 12 boards around Melbourne! If you can assist, please email [email protected].

Summer Sol and Dah Doo: (Yes, you read that correctly—we are switching it around!) Our students, their families, and the broader Preshilian community will come together to celebrate the end of the academic year. This event will flip the Doo Dah theme and provide an opportunity for our students to celebrate while giving back to the community they are a part of. There will be music, art, food, and fun. We look forward to seeing as many families as possible there to celebrate together. This event will take place from 3:30 PM to 6 PM on December 6th in the Arlington front yard.

Wishing all our families a wonderful weekend ahead!

Warm regards,

Aaron Mackinnon
Principal

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Reconciliation Plan
MYP coordinator and teacher, Jason recently attended the National RAP Conference in Meanjin (Brisbane), representing Preshil. As we are navigating the first year of our Preshil RAP (Reconciliation Action Plan), this is an important opportunity for the school, as we as a community, embed a commitment to our First Nations students, their families, and the wider community.

Preshil is proud to be part of the 3000+ organisations with Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) from all around Australia during this historic phase in Australia’s reconciliation.

In the first photo, Jason is alongside Natalie Ahmat, host of NITV News.

Preshil T-Shirt
The Preshil T-Shirts are now available! They are available in two colours, Dark Green or Light Green in adult sizes, S, M, L, XL, or Light Green for kids in sizes 6, 8, 12. There are limited numbers so make sure you place your orders before they sell out. For some sizes and colours there may be a 2-3 week delivery period.

You can order via this link or come and buy at T- Shirt at our Summer Sol Stall on the 6th December.

Theatre Elective
This week, our Year 9 & 10 Theatre Elective students had the privilege of participating in a special workshop by Impro Melbourne’s, Brenna Dixon. Brenna ran a fantastic workshop on “Songprov”, improvising songs up on the spot. We are so proud of these students for giving it a go, taking risks, and being melodic and creative as they fluidly improvised through song!

Beyond Blue Fundraiser
Last Friday, members of the Student Representative Council (SRC) and Student Wellbeing Team organised and led a ‘Big Blue Table’ Event as a fundraiser for Beyond Blue. This was in honour of mental health awareness month in October.

Beyond Blue research shows us that 45% of people in Australia will face a mental health condition in their lifetime, 25% of people in Australia will experience anxiety, and 1 in 7 will experience depression in their lifetime. This event was about bringing the topic of mental health and wellbeing to the Big Blue Table where ‘we make mental health everyday table talk’ and help fight stigma.

Students and staff contributed baked goods across the BK campus and prior to purchasing, everyone was required to write a wellbeing tip to add to a wellbeing tree to share with the community.

All proceeds will go to the 24/7 support service that Beyond Blue offers to all those impacted by anxiety, depression and suicide.

Year 7 Cardboard Arcade
Over the past few months Year 7 have been designing and making arcade games out of cardboard boxes and other recycled materials. They investigated how these machines function and through the design process students first created a prototype and then progressed to building a full size version from recycled cardboard.

This has been a challenging and rewarding unit where students have developed construction skills and have learnt through trial and error while building their machines.

The Year 7’s welcome visitors to come to the Yr 7 CARDZONE arcade to play some games on Monday 11th of November between 12:10 – 1:30pm. CARDZONE is situated outside the Design room.

Entry tickets and tokens can be collected at the arcade and will give visitors 3 tokens to play. Some of the games that you will see at the arcade are: The claw machine, roulette wheel, Crocosile Catch, billiards, ball toss, the spinning wheel and many more.

Looking forward to seeing you at CARDZONE arcade on Monday 11th November outside the Design room

Valedictory Dinner
Arlington has been a hive of activity preparing the Kevin Borland Hall for the class of 2024 Year 12 Graduate Dinner. We re-hang the curtain that they created when they were in the Peppercorn Classroom, and then set about transforming the Hall.

The Peppercorns chose the theme, and this year they chose Big City. They create the setting, the Sunroom children create the table centrepieces, the Loft room create the placemats and the Lighthouse children create the paper chains. Every child has a part to play in congratulating and sending off our year 12 students, some of whom remember taking part in this tradition at Arlington.
