During their visit to the studio of David Booth, as part of our joint art and classroom inquiries, our Peppercorn students enjoyed seeing a working art studio and trying their hand at different techniques.
“Melbourne artist David Booth (b. 1981) floats and wanders around making things. He approaches his work like a child and invites people to share his joy. His play includes drawing, painting and sculpting and he works on various projects with art institutions, galleries, schools, corporates and friends. He was born in Tasmania but has been based in Melbourne for a while now” (David Booth’s Website 2022).
David gave a wonderfully insightful talk about his process of artmaking. The children appeared particularly inspired by his approach of drawing as a habit and experimenting with different mediums.
Our students had lots of questions for him and were very interested in his sticker collection and figurines. They sought some advice on how to approach large-scale works in preparation for their curtain design. David also ran a fun drawing game where the children had to replicate each other’s drawings after only viewing them briefly.
At the end of the day, we laid all student images out in a grid. It was a great way to think about perspective, translation and interpretation.
