PRESHIL WEEKLY
Welcome to the Preshil Weekly!
We have an exciting week ahead with our IBDP Arts Exhibition on Monday, 2 September, and the Arlington ‘Open Afternoon of Learning’ on Tuesday, 3 September. These events offer a fantastic opportunity for our families to visit the school and see the creative and inspiring work our students have been producing. More importantly, they give our students a chance to showcase their work, discuss it with their loved ones and other members of the Preshil community, and experience the pride of having their efforts appreciated by an audience. We encourage all families to attend and support our students in celebrating their achievements.
Warm regards,
Aaron Mackinnon
Principal

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
IBDP Art Exhibition
The Art department has been buzzing with activity this week as the Class of 2024 prepares for the IBDP Art Exhibition. This exhibition serves as both the final assessment for our Visual Arts students and a celebration of their hard work and creativity over the past two years. The Preshil community is warmly invited to attend the Class of 2024 Visual Arts Exhibition and Performance Evening on Monday, 2 September. The exhibition will take place in the Senior Art Studio from 5:00 to 6:00 pm, with the official opening at 5:30 pm. Following the exhibition, there will be a theatre performance at 6:30 pm.
Wellbeing Wednesday: Managing Emotions
Last Wednesday, our Year 7 students had the opportunity to participate in an incursion led by Toolbox Education, an organisation that makes psychological tools for everyday life relatable through interactive workshops. The workshop was part of our Wellbeing Wednesday program, focusing on Managing Emotions and exploring how students can regulate their feelings. Our facilitator, David, a psychologist, used the analogy of a ‘shaken Coke bottle’ to illustrate how we can become emotionally dysregulated throughout the day. Students were introduced to evidence-based psychological tools they can use daily to soothe their senses and reduce fight, flight, or freeze responses. We practised practical strategies such as Progressive Muscle Relaxation, the 5 Senses activity, and energising exercises.

Peppercorns Melbourne Museum Visit
On Tuesday, to celebrate Science Week, the Peppercorns visited the Melbourne Museum. They explored several exhibits connected by the theme of climate change, including “600 Million Years,” “Dynamic Earth,” and the Forest Gallery, all of which were incredibly thought-provoking. We also took a quick look at the insect display before attending an educational session on “Climate Change and Victoria’s Future,” where we examined various aspects of climate and weather. The students were enthusiastic scientists, fully engaged and brimming with questions.
Kinder Update
This week in the kindergarten, we’ve been enjoying observational nature walks around Arlington. We’re at the end of guling (orchid) season, with poorneet (tadpole) season just about to begin. The children have noticed many plants blooming with flowers and leaves, and they’ve observed that the weather is becoming warmer and much windier! The jasmine and honeysuckle are being used in a variety of potions and sandpit recipes, all under the watchful eyes of our wonderful teachers.

Year 8 Language & Literature
In Year 8 Language & Literature, we are reading The Giver and decided to experience a dystopian society firsthand by creating our own classroom rules. The experiment led to some fun and frustration, with students quickly realising that following arbitrary rules wasn’t as enjoyable as they thought. This sparked meaningful discussions about the themes in The Giver, such as the value of individuality and living life by your own rules.
