PRESHIL WEEKLY
Dear Preshil Community,
Returning to school after the term break, there’s been a noticeable shift in the energy of our community, with excitement and a sense of renewal. Last week, we had the pleasure of celebrating our Year 12s during their final week of classes and the joyful celebrations that followed in the high school. This week, our students’ creativity and musicianship were on full display at the Spring Concert. Term 4 is a wonderful time to be at Preshil, with many opportunities for outdoor learning as the weather improves and the culmination of the year’s learning coming together across multiple areas.
The seasonal change we’re enjoying—spending more time outdoors and soaking up the sunshine—mirrors the operational work we’ve been doing as a school. Over the past several months, we’ve focused on realigning our governance and operations to ensure the school runs smoothly and efficiently. This groundwork allows us to concentrate on what matters most: our students and their learning experiences, thriving in Preshil’s unique community spaces.
In many ways, this process has felt like winter: a time to focus and push through important tasks. Now, as we enter spring, we’re beginning to see the rewards of our efforts, with new opportunities taking shape. We are in an exciting building phase, preparing with enthusiasm for the year ahead and exploring ways to enhance learning spaces where our young people can connect and thrive each day as part of the ongoing Preshil experience.
Later today, I will send out a detailed community update via Compass, which will provide an overview of the operational changes and staffing updates for 2025.
This week, I also had the great pleasure of meeting with our Year 7 parents for a coffee and morning tea. It was a relaxed and enjoyable gathering, where we simply spent time together and got to know one another better. Hearing about the journeys of our Year 7 students this year—whether they were new to Preshil or moved up from Arlington—was truly inspiring. Their growth and the connections they’ve made have been a joy to witness. We shared plenty of laughs, and I’d like to extend my thanks to everyone who was able to attend. It was a delightful morning, and I look forward to hosting more gatherings with other cohorts and groups in our community in the coming weeks.
Warm regards,
Aaron Mackinnon
Principal

THE WEEK IN REVIEW
Preshil Spring Concert
Last night, we gathered in the Kevin Borland Hall at Arlington for our annual Spring Concert – a joyous celebration of our students’ incredible talents. The supportive audience created an atmosphere of warmth and encouragement, with cheers and applause for each performance. Hosted by Jesse Pollitt, the concert featured a diverse range of musical styles, from classical to contemporary hits, performed by soloists and ensembles. The event reflected the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, and wider community. We would like to extend special thanks to our Year 12 students – Isabelle Hayes, Oliver Hill, Stella Holmes à Court, and Aimee Smith – for sharing their talents during their study week. Our gratitude also goes to teachers like Dan Arnott, new parents Caterina Pacitti and Chris McDuff, and everyone who contributed to making the evening a success. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to our Head of Music, Michelle Berner, for her incredible effort in coordinating this event. Her dedication was key to its success. Thank you to everyone who participated and attended; your support made the evening truly special.
Connected but Conflicted: Navigating the Digital Grey with our Tweens and Teens
An interactive educational session providing families with insights into the nuanced ways that social media and digital technology impact the wellbeing of our young people. Together, we will explore guiding principles and frameworks for having empathetic conversations with them. While there are no simple answers to this complex issue, the goal is for parents and caregivers to leave the session with a deeper understanding of the priorities most relevant to their family.
Date: Tuesday 19 November
Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Location: BK Library

Drama Australia and New Zealand Conference (in New Zealand)
Preshil’s exceptional Theatre teacher, Laurie Page, recently presented at the Drama Australia and New Zealand Conference in Wellington, New Zealand. The conference focused on sustaining and growing creative practices for a more nourished future, and Laurie contributed by leading a workshop titled “No Planet B: Using Jacques Lecoq to Teach Climate Change.” Congratulations to Laurie for delivering such a successful and impactful session, making the Preshil community proud.
Arlington Whole Campus Meeting
The children met with Cressida and Aaron at the Extraordinary Whole School Meeting to share their thoughts about the Homeroom arrangements for 2025. Their input reflected a deep commitment to Arlington traditions – “Will the Grade 5s still write a farewell song for the Grade 6s?”, a sense of optimism – “Will we still have camps, and will the Grade 2s go on camp?”, and a connection to current practices – “Will the Loft Room Grade 3s have laptops?”. The children were encouraged to see that they would likely have the best solutions for each of these scenarios. And yes, we have plenty of planning underway for Homeroom camps.

Fly By Cafe
The penultimate cafe fundraiser by the Sunroom children was held on Friday, 18 October. With demand for food bank services at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) on the rise and donations declining, there couldn’t be a better time to support this important cause. We encourage families to donate high-demand items and provide their children with some gold coins for a sweet treat. The final cafe will be held next week.
