PRESHIL WEEKLY
Hello Preshil community,
Welcome to another edition of the Weekly!
Farewell, Year 12 – Valedictory Dinner 2025
This evening marks a significant moment in the lives of our Year 12 students, as we gather for their Valedictory Dinner. For many of them, today is their final day as Preshil students. From here, they begin to step beyond the progressive walls of our school and into the broader world, carrying with them their hopes, dreams, and aspirations.
We are immensely proud of this remarkable cohort. The final two years of schooling are fast paced and demanding. Our Year 12s have navigated this time with resilience and determination, supporting one another and forging a strong sense of unity along the way.
Tonight is a culmination not just of these past two years, but of an entire journey from childhood to young adulthood. Kindergarten to Year 12. It is with both pride and a touch of sadness that we send our Year 12s off. We wish our graduating class the very best for their futures. You will always be part of the Preshil community.
A Community Farewell
As part of our Preshil tradition, we come together as a whole-school community to honour and celebrate our graduating class. Tonight’s celebration has been lovingly prepared by staff and children alike. Our Arlington children and staff have handcrafted decorations, thoughtful created and wrapped personalised gifts, and a written note for every Year 12 student. These gestures embody the spirit of giving and connection that defines our school.
This evening isn’t just a farewell, it’s an expression of gratitude, love, and support from our younger students, parents, teachers, and staff. It is a true celebration of what makes Preshil special: a deep sense of belonging, and a community that uplifts each individual.
Campus Futures Update
This week, we hosted a second round of Campus Futures information sessions, providing updates on our strategic vision and plans for the school’s future. These sessions, held both in-person and online, have been incredibly valuable for sharing details on timelines, site development, and the evolving educational vision that will continue to shape Preshil’s future.
They’ve also been an opportunity to connect directly with families, hear their questions and perspectives, and reinforce our shared commitment to making thoughtful, future-focused decisions together for our school.
Warmly,
Aaron Mackinnon
Principal

Students Shaping Our School, Not Just Learning In It
This week, we invited Secondary students to take part in the recruitment process for new Pastoral Support Leaders at Blackhall. Their role was not symbolic, it was central. Students joined the panel, asked thoughtful questions, and offered valuable insights that helped inform our decision-making.
At Preshil, we don’t just say we value student voice, we act on it. When it comes to roles that directly support their wellbeing, it makes sense that students should have a genuine say in who joins our community. They know what matters. They know how it feels to be seen, supported and understood. And they are deeply capable of articulating what kind of adults they want to walk alongside them.
Involving students in processes like this isn’t an add-on. It’s part of the culture of trust we’ve been building for generations. And it’s one of the many ways we honour the belief that education works best when young people are active participants, not passive recipients, in the life of their school.
A special shout out to Hamish and James for their efforts in this.
Year 9/10 Psychology Debate
Year 9/10 Psychology students recently explored Weber’s theories of “Social Action and Power” and Bronfenbrenner’s “Ecological Systems Theory” through a lively debate on the provocative statement: “Cults are not outside society; they are society intensified.”
Drawing on forensic psychology perspectives and real-world examples, students examined how these theories operate within groups and across society.
Preshils’ senior debating mentors joined as adjudicators, praising the students’ critical thinking, confidence, and teamwork. The debate showcased their ability to question social norms, construct persuasive arguments, and engage thoughtfully with complex ideas. This was a true celebration of inquiry-based learning in action.

Kindergarten Explore The Wurundjeri season Buarth Gurru, The Grass Flowering Season
“This is the wind and the snake that bites the sun.”
This term, our Kindergarten children have been continuing their journey with the Wurundjeri season Buarth Gurru, the Grass Flowering Season, as part of our year-long Growing with the Wurundjeri Seasons project.
Through sensory observation, conversation, and artmaking, they’re exploring the deep connection between land and people. In the Pines, they’ve been invited to slow down, observe, and draw what they notice: “the tree roots and the stone river,” “the big tree with its branches and leaves,” and “the wind and the snake that bites the sun.”
In the studio, they’ve been experimenting with black ink, natural materials and found objects to explore how nature shifts over time, and how we might respond. One piece, started weeks ago, has slowly transformed as children added layers using tree branches, leaves, and even kitchen utensils.
These works are not just beautiful, they’re windows into how children make sense of the world, and how they find their place in it.
We look forward to sharing this learning with families at our Summer Sol event, where the full arc of the project will be celebrated through the children’s words, artworks, and reflections.
