PRESHIL WEEKLY

Hello Preshil Community, and welcome to another edition of the Weekly!

There is certainly a lot going on at Preshil as we head into the final few weeks of the year. You’ll find below a snapshot of some of the exciting things happening across our school, including our children’s walkathon today, the Japan study tour, and much more.

I’d also like to send out one last reminder about our Summer Sol / Dah Doo gathering happening next Friday afternoon. This will be a wonderful, community-centric way for us all to come together and wrap up the school year in true Preshilian style. I wholeheartedly encourage our families and young ones to join us!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend ahead!

Warm regards,

Aaron Mackinnon
Principal

THE WEEK IN REVIEW

Year 7 2025 Orientation
We had a fantastic day welcoming our incoming Year 7 students to Preshil Secondary School for Orientation Day. The day was filled with “get to know you” activities, a campus tour, a lively and creative “body percussion” music session, an art session creating works reflecting students unique interests and personalities, an outdoor frisbee PE session, and a concluding scavenger hunt that allowed students to test their knowledge of the Preshil campus.

We can’t wait to welcome you back in 2025 for what promises to be an exciting and enriching year at Preshil.

Japan Study Tour
The Japan Study tour is still underway! The group undertook an Iaido sword class at Edo Mugai-ryu with teacher Sakaguchi Sensei. Sakaguchi Sensei led the group and each participant finalised the class by cutting through a mat with a real sword.

Berthe Couchette and NGV Prize
We are so proud to share that Max Li in Grade 6 has not only won the Berth Mouche French Poetry Prize, but that he performed this poem in front of over 500 people and also secured the NGV Prize for his efforts. Felicitations Max, you have made us all so proud.

TOK
The Year 11 students put on their TOK Exhibition this week. Customs forms from South Korea! Barristers robes! Vintage rolleiflexes! Perogen recipes! Sylvia Plath’s journals! What do these seemingly disparate objects all have in common?

They’re all objects used in the Year 11 TOK Exhibition! Students prepared and exhibited their work in the Library and shared their stories, opinions, thoughts and ideas with Year 10 students, inspiring them with their own forthcoming TOK journeys. This is the first formal assessment in the IB Calendar and asks students to examine how theories of knowledge manifest in the world around us.

Gemology Excursion
Today the children from the Loft Room and Lighthouse, who were part of our Rocks and Gems elective, visited the Gemmological Association of Australia. We met Catherine, who showed us some of the equipment they use to help determine the type of rock or gem.  And we visited the exhibition room too. We also shared that we knew when something was glass, and not a gem, because it would have bubbles in it. All children were given a bag with some special precious stones, and even a pearl!

Thank you to Alex Turnidge for organising this outing.

Year 9 Students Coaching Arlington Students
The Year 9 assessment task involved students selecting a sport of their choice and creating a 15 minute coaching session for our school’s Primary Students to develop their skills. Over the unit they will practice their session with their peers and reflect and make changes to ensure that their program runs as successfully as possible. This culminates with the students going down to the primary campus and running a session for a small group who are younger than their peers.

Sunroomers Walkathon
Today the Sunroomers commenced their Walkathon along their ‘fraction of kilometre’ circuits around Arlington. The initiative gathered pledges and raised funds for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Activities
Preshil offers a range of Muti-age activities for students to select and drive the direction of their projects to support the development of their interests and passions. Pictured are some of the great opportunities from Stop Motion, Soccer, painting and Theatre. It is an amazing program that allows students the opportunity to find their interests and develop their strengths.
